Next StepsThis booklet is for any person who is diagnosed HIV positive – regardless of gender, sexuality, or cultural background. It details how the virus affects your body, offers advice on how to manage your life as an HIV positive person and provides suggestions on how to make decisions around treatments, sex, telling people and your legal rights. It will not answer all of your questions, but it may be a useful starting point. You might also find this resource useful if you have been positive for a while and would like more information. You might find advice in this booklet useful at different times as you come to terms with your diagnosis. You might find some sections more relevant to you than others or you might decide you want to read the entire booklet to learn as much as you can about HIV. This resource was produced by the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO) in conjunction with the National Association of People Living With HIV (NAPWA).

Real Time

This booklet has been designed to help gay men work out what is safe, as well as assist them to avoid taking risks. Reducing risks will reduce stress and worry associated with sex. For HIV-negative men this means not worrying about becoming infected with HIV. For HIV-positive men this means not having to worry about exposing sex partners to HIV. Specifically, this booklet will cover choices about not using condoms based on finding sex partners who are the same HIV status as you. This resource was produced by AFAO in conjunction with NAPWA.

Managing Side EffectsThis booklet is for people with HIV who experience side effects from HIV treatments or other physical symptoms that may be due to HIV infection. It is intended as a guide to help you identify the kinds of side effects that some people with HIV experience, and to provide suggestions on how to prevent, manage, reduce or eliminate some common side effects through the use of medicines, complementary and supportive therapies or practical measures. Because some side effects can be serious, it is highly advisable that you discuss any side effects you have, or treatments you plan to use to manage them, with your doctor or health care provider before deciding on any course of action. This resource was produced by AFAO in conjunction with NAPWA and Queensland Positive People (QPP).

HIV Tests and Treatments This booklet describes the currently available antiviral drugs for the treatment and management of HIV infection. It also
describes some common tests used to monitor the health of people with HIV, and how these tests can be used to help you
look after your health, or make decisions about starting, stopping or changing antiviral treatments. This booklet is for anyone with HIV who may be considering starting, stopping or changing treatment. It is designed for all people with HIV, whether you have been recently diagnosed, or have known about your HIV positive status for some time. This resource was produced by AFAO in conjunction with NAPWA.

Personal Stories about Living with HIV
This special edition of Positive Living (the quarterly newsletter of NAPWA and AFAO) gave a personal look at living with Aphthae six people featured here give a range of approaches to looking after their physical and mental wellbeing. None of them has pretended that the process has been easy and they all acknowledge that having HIV can make their efforts that little bit harder – but managing the virus is an important motivation in the first place. Antiretrovirals may have done a lot to keep people alive but, with their side-effects and adherence requirements, they have not always improved people's quality of life as we might like.
